OMAHA, Nebraska – The Omaha Police Department has officially identified the two individuals who lost their lives in an unfortunate officer-involved shooting incident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning in south Omaha.

According to the Omaha Police, two off-duty officers were engaged in a shooting incident in an alleyway near 32nd and L Streets at approximately 2 a.m. The altercation arose from a disturbance related to a firearm.

The officers’ gunfire struck two adult males who were inside an SUV at the time. The injured individuals were immediately transported to Nebraska Medicine with severe injuries. Unfortunately, both victims succumbed to their injuries and have been identified as Fernando Rodriguez-Juarez, aged 26, and Jonathan Hernandez-Rosales, aged 28. The Omaha Police Department confirmed that a handgun was discovered inside the SUV.

The Omaha Police Department clarified that the two officers were off-duty and were working at a nearby establishment when the incident unfolded. Consequently, the availability of body camera footage capturing the incident is limited.

To ensure a comprehensive understanding of the events leading up to, during, and after the incident, detectives are diligently collecting and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses. This additional evidence will aid in the ongoing investigation.

Following standard protocol, both officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave. Their interviews are scheduled for early next week, and further details will be disclosed as the investigation progresses.

Chief Todd Schmaderer emphasized the Omaha Police Department’s commitment to transparency, stating, “The Omaha Police Department is dedicated to ensuring transparency, and our detectives, with the assistance of two external agencies, are actively gathering all available evidence related to the officer-involved incident from earlier this morning. We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available. I kindly request the public’s patience as this investigation unfolds.”

In conducting a thorough investigation, the Omaha Police Department’s Officer Involved Investigations Team is being supported by the Nebraska State Patrol and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.
