Tragic Fire at Perfume Manufacturing Unit Claims Lives of Four Women in Himachal Pradesh’s Solan

Shimla, Feb 4 (PTI) – In a devastating incident, a fire broke out at a perfume manufacturing unit located in the Baddi industrial area of Himachal Pradesh’s Solan, resulting in the tragic death of five individuals. Officials have now confirmed that four out of the five deceased have been identified as women.

The incident occurred on Friday around 2:45 pm, engulfing the factory in flames and causing immense destruction. The injured woman, Pinki, who was initially declared dead on Friday by the PGIMER Chandigarh, was later identified as one of the victims. The bodies of three other victims, namely Rahnuma, Shashi, and Rakhi, were recovered from the factory ashes on Saturday.

While the search for the missing four persons is still underway, Solan Deputy Commissioner Manmohan Sharma stated that a total of 13 individuals were reported missing. However, five individuals have been traced and accounted for, leaving four still unaccounted for.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, and authorities are investigating the incident to determine the exact circumstances leading to this tragic event. It is still uncertain whether the number of casualties will rise as the search operation continues.

Injuries and Negligence

According to the state emergency operation centre, approximately 30 individuals sustained injuries in the fire and have been admitted to various hospitals for treatment. The severity of their injuries varies, with multiple individuals suffering injuries to their hands, legs, and even spines.

Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri visited the site on Saturday and accused the company of criminal negligence, stating that the fire broke out due to their failure to adhere to necessary safety standards for the workers. As a result, orders have been issued to take appropriate action against the company. An FIR has been registered, and the owners of the company are facing legal consequences.

The safety of the workers was compromised, leading to the untimely demise of five individuals. Deputy Chief Minister Agnihotri emphasized that the search operation will continue until the last person is traced.

Arrest and Investigations

In light of the incident, Chander Shekhar, the factory head of N R Aromas company, has been arrested. An FIR has been registered against him under sections 285 (negligence), 336 (endangering life), 337 (causing hurt), and culpable homicide not amounting to murder (IPC). The police are actively pursuing the case and conducting a thorough investigation into the matter.

To ensure a comprehensive inquiry, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Additional Superintendent of Police Ashok Verma has been constituted. Additionally, a magisterial enquiry has been ordered by the Solan DC to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Hazardous Environment and Safety Concerns

Eyewitnesses present at the scene reported that the fire-fighting operations were hindered by the thick smoke of hazardous gases emitted by the cosmetic materials. Gases such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, and sulphur dioxide posed significant risks to the workers and rescue teams.

The intensity of the fire forced workers to climb on top of the building in a desperate attempt to find safety. Moreover, the building structure has been severely weakened due to the fire, posing additional challenges to the rescue and recovery efforts.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of adhering to safety standards and protocols in industrial environments. Authorities are committed to ensuring justice for the victims and taking stringent actions against those responsible for the negligence that led to this devastating fire.
