Tragedy Strikes as Fire Engulfs Perfume Manufacturing Unit in Himachal Pradesh

A devastating fire broke out at a perfume manufacturing unit in the Baddi industrial area of Himachal Pradesh’s Solan, claiming the lives of five individuals, all of whom were women. The incident, which occurred around 2:45 p.m., has left the authorities scrambling to identify and locate four missing persons.

As the rescue operations continue, officials have confirmed the identities of four out of the five deceased. The injured woman, Pinki, who was initially declared dead by the PGIMER Chandigarh, has been identified, along with the bodies of Rahnuma, Shashi, and Rakhi, recovered from the charred remains of the factory.

The search for the missing individuals is still underway, with Solan Deputy Commissioner Manmohan Sharma revealing that a total of 13 people are currently unaccounted for. The survivors of the tragic incident recounted harrowing tales of escaping the inferno by jumping from the building’s upper floors, resulting in multiple injuries.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, and investigations are ongoing. The authorities have not ruled out the possibility of the death toll rising as the search for the missing persons continues.

The state emergency operation center has released details indicating that approximately 30 people sustained injuries and have been admitted to various hospitals for treatment. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, who visited the site, expressed his outrage at the company’s alleged negligence, holding them responsible for the fire.

“The company displayed a shocking disregard for the safety of its workers, leading to this tragic incident. We have taken immediate action against the company, including filing an FIR and initiating legal proceedings against the owners,” stated Agnihotri.

The deputy chief minister emphasized the importance of locating all missing persons and ensuring their safety. However, the ongoing rescue efforts are being hindered by the weakened structure of the building and the toxic gases emitted by the burnt chemicals, making the operation extremely challenging.

Following the incident, Chander Shekhar, the factory head of N R Aromas company, has been arrested. The police have registered an FIR against him under sections 285 (negligence), 336 (endangering life), 337 (causing hurt), and culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

To ensure a thorough investigation into the matter, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Additional Superintendent of Police Ashok Verma has been formed. Additionally, a magisterial enquiry has been ordered by the Solan Deputy Commissioner to shed light on the circumstances leading to the tragic incident.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire-fighting operations were impeded by the thick smoke of hazardous gases, such as carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, and sulphur dioxide, emanating from the cosmetic materials. This forced the workers to seek refuge on the roof of the building, desperately waiting for rescue.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the crucial need for stringent safety measures within industrial spaces. Authorities must ensure that companies adhere to the highest safety standards to prevent such devastating accidents from occurring in the future.
