Army Promotes 211 Officers and 1,239 Other Ranks on Independence Day

The Sri Lanka Army celebrated the 76th Independence Day on February 4, 2024, with a momentous promotion ceremony. President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, bestowed well-deserved promotions upon 211 officers and 1,239 other ranks of the Army.

These promotions were made on the recommendation of the Ministry of Defence and Army Commander Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage. The Sri Lanka Army expressed its gratitude to the President and the Ministry of Defence for their support in recognizing the hard work and dedication of these individuals.

In the officers’ category, the promotions were as follows: two Brigadiers were elevated to the rank of Major General, twelve Colonels were promoted to Brigadier, thirteen Lieutenant Colonels were promoted to Colonel, seventeen Majors were promoted to Lieutenant Colonel, twenty-nine Captains were promoted to Major (including Quartermasters), thirteen Lieutenants were promoted to Captain (including Quartermasters), and 125 Second Lieutenants were promoted to Lieutenant (Regular Force & Volunteer Force).

The category of Other Ranks also saw significant promotions. Forty-nine Warrant Officers – II were promoted to Warrant Officer – I, while one hundred and eleven Staff Sergeants were promoted to Warrant Officer – II. Additionally, one hundred and thirty-five Sergeants were promoted to Staff Sergeant, one hundred and seventy Corporals were promoted to Sergeant, three hundred and sixty-four Lance Corporals were promoted to Corporal, and three hundred and thirty Privates were promoted to Lance Corporal (Regular Force and Volunteer Force).

The Army is proud to announce that two Senior Brigadiers, Major General P.N. Godellawatta and Major General U.L.J.S. Perera, have been elevated to the two-star General rank. This promotion is a testament to their exceptional leadership and commitment to the Sri Lanka Army.
