One of the affected flights was the PIA-Jeddah Lahore Flight PK 940, which had to be diverted to Multan due to the adverse weather conditions. Similarly, the Emirates Dubai-Karachi flight EK-602, after refueling in Muscat, had to return to Karachi.

As a result of the unavailability of aircraft, 16 PIA flights were unable to operate that day. This included the cancellation of four Islamabad-Gilgit flights (PK-601, 602, 605, and 606), four Karachi-Islamabad flights (PK-300, 301, 308, and 369), and two PIA Islamabad-Sukkur flights (PK-631 and 632). PIA’s Dubai-Islamabad flight (PK-211 and 212) was also among the canceled flights.

Flight data indicated that PIA flights PK-325 and PK-326 between Quetta and Islamabad were canceled, along with PIA’s Lahore to Quetta flights PK-322 and 323. Furthermore, even a private airline’s Dubai-Islamabad flights PA 210 and 211 were affected by the weather conditions. Additionally, two flights of foreign airlines from Doha to Multan were canceled as well.

City Paralyzed by Urban Flooding

In addition to the flight disruptions, heavy rainfall caused urban flooding in Karachi, leading to a series of problems throughout the city. Traffic jams and power outages were reported in several parts of Karachi as a result of the flooding.

Major arteries such as Shahrah-e-Faisal road, the Old City area, Drigh Road, NIPA flyover, and Natha Khan were submerged after the Saturday downpour. This created significant challenges for the city’s residents, who were left stranded and unable to commute.

Unfortunately, Karachi is no stranger to annual challenges of urban flooding. The city’s inadequate drainage system often fails to handle the heavy rain, resulting in casualties from drowning and electrocution. This recurring issue highlights the urgent need for improved infrastructure and disaster management measures in the city.

Local authorities have been working tirelessly to address the aftermath of the heavy rainfall. Efforts are underway to clear the flooded areas and restore normalcy to the affected parts of Karachi. However, it is a daunting task that requires coordinated efforts from various departments and agencies.

Conclusion

The heavy rains in Karachi on Sunday had severe consequences for the city’s transportation system. The cancellation of 20 flights disrupted travel plans for many passengers and left them stranded. Additionally, the urban flooding caused by the heavy rainfall resulted in traffic congestion and power outages, creating further inconvenience for the city’s residents.

This unfortunate incident highlights the need for better infrastructure and disaster management strategies in Karachi to prevent such disruptions in the future. It serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by the city during the monsoon season and the urgent action required to mitigate the impact of heavy rains.
