Former Trump Administration Official Shot in Washington, D.C., Carjacking Dies

Mike Gill, a former official of the Trump administration, who fell victim to a violent carjacking spree in Washington, D.C., on Monday, has tragically passed away, according to a statement given by his wife.

Gill, who previously served at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission during Donald Trump’s presidency, was shot during the carjacking incident, which unfortunately claimed the life of another individual.

Expressing her grief, Kristina Gill stated, “His sudden departure has left a void in our lives that can never be filled.” She described Mike Gill as not only a devoted husband and father but also a cherished son, brother, and friend.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Gill was deeply committed to making a positive impact on others’ lives. He actively participated in his church, mentored and befriended colleagues, served on the District of Columbia Board of Elections, and coached his daughter’s soccer team, as shared by Kristina Gill.

According to his biography on the Housing Policy Council’s website, Gill held the position of Senior Vice President of Capital Markets in the organization. The council expressed their deep sorrow, referring to Gill’s passing as a “huge loss.”

Erica Richardson, a spokesperson for the Gill family, first disclosed news of the shooting on Wednesday.

The Metropolitan Police Department of Washington provided details in a statement regarding the incident. It stated that the violence unfolded on Monday afternoon when an unidentified assailant entered a vehicle and shot the male driver before fleeing. Gill’s family confirmed that he was the victim of this shooting.

According to the police, the entire ordeal, involving a Jeep Grand Cherokee, lasted approximately three minutes. The assailant then attempted to steal a Mercedes-Benz but was unsuccessful, as reported by law enforcement officials.

In a tragic turn of events, the attacker confronted a man and a woman, demanding their car keys. Subsequently, he shot and killed Alberto Vasquez Jr., aged 35, before making his escape in a stolen Chrysler 200, according to an incident report.

The following morning, the suspect fired a single shot at a police cruiser on Interstate 295, causing damage to the driver’s side door and shattering the window.

The assailant, identified as 28-year-old Artell Cunningham, was fatally shot by police in New Carrollton, Maryland, on Tuesday, confirmed Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown in a statement.

Authorities discovered Cunningham after locating a disabled SUV, which was later determined to be stolen. As officers were conducting a search for the occupants of the vehicle, Cunningham approached them while brandishing two handguns.

In response, two officers fired at Cunningham, striking him. The attorney general clarified that no officers were harmed in the incident.

Cunningham was also implicated in two other carjackings in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
