Former Trump Administration Official Dies in Attempted Carjacking in Downtown Washington, D.C.

(The Hill) — A former official from the Trump administration tragically passed away after being shot during an attempted carjacking spree in downtown Washington, D.C., last Monday. The victim’s family confirmed the devastating news to The Hill.

Mike Gill, a married father of three, was working at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission during former President Trump’s tenure in the White House. He was shot last Monday while inside his car in the 900 block of K Street NW. Unfortunately, despite being initially in critical condition, Gill succumbed to his injuries.

Gill’s wife, Kristina Gill, expressed her profound sadness in a statement, saying, “It is with deep sadness that I inform the community of the passing of my husband, Mike Gill. His sudden departure has left an irreplaceable void in our lives.”

Remembered as a devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend, Gill’s impact on those around him was profound. Kristina wrote, “Throughout his remarkable life, Mike brought people together and made them feel included, supported, and loved. His heart was evident in everything he did, as demonstrated by his mentorship and deep friendships with his colleagues. Above all, Mike spoke with immense pride and love about our children, Sean, Brian, and Annika.”

Attempted Carjacking Spree

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) reported that the suspect, identified as Artell Cunningham, 28, approached Gill’s parked car, entered it, and shot him before fleeing the scene. Approximately an hour later, Cunningham unsuccessfully attempted to carjack another individual, who managed to escape and promptly reported the incident to the police.

Subsequently, Cunningham approached a man and woman in their car in northeast D.C. and demanded the keys. When the man refused, Cunningham shot him and fled. Tragically, the man later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Authorities later discovered the car used in the carjacking in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Cunningham then attempted two more carjackings in the same area. At around 3 a.m. on Tuesday, he was spotted driving one of the stolen vehicles on the highway and fired shots at a police cruiser.

New Carrollton Police Department officers eventually encountered Cunningham, who brandished two handguns. In response, the officers fired at and struck the suspect. Cunningham was taken into custody but later died at the hospital.

A Life of Service and Loss

Prior to his untimely death, Gill held the position of senior vice president for capital markets at the Housing Policy Council. He was an attorney and had previously served as a member of the D.C. Board of Elections.

Ed DeMarco, president of the Housing Policy Council, expressed his grief over Gill’s passing, stating, “Mike was an exceptional lawyer, public servant, colleague, and community member. He dedicated his time and talent to serve his country, city, church, and community.”

Gill’s death has left a significant void not only in his family’s life but also within the Housing Policy Council and the Washington, DC community. He was regarded as an outstanding citizen, neighbor, co-worker, and friend.

Concerns over Rising Carjackings and Shootings

This tragic incident comes amidst growing concerns over the surge in carjackings and shootings in and around the nation’s capital. In response to the escalating violence, the Department of Justice announced last month that it would strengthen its efforts to combat violent crime and carjackings in Washington.

The loss of Mike Gill serves as a devastating reminder of the need for increased vigilance and measures to ensure the safety of individuals in the community.
