Kenya Wildlife Services Recovers Body of Boy After Crocodile Attack in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay

Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) successfully retrieved the body of an eleven-year-old boy who tragically fell victim to a crocodile attack in Ndhiwa, Homa Bay, Kenya. The incident took place on Friday, February 2, and the body recovery was carried out following the dissection of the crocodile by KWS officers along the River Kuja.

A Desperate 24-Hour Search

Despite the heartbreaking incident happening on February 1, it took over 24 hours for the extensive search to locate the young victim’s body. The search efforts were concentrated along the riverbanks, where the crocodile attack occurred.

The victim, identified as FO, was an innocent eleven-year-old grade two student who met his unfortunate demise while fetching water from the river. Shockingly, his peers, who were accompanying him at the time, witnessed the horrifying incident unfold and quickly raised the alarm.

FO’s mother, Janet Auma, who was at home during the incident, rushed to the scene upon hearing the commotion caused by the children. It was then that she discovered the tragic truth: her son had been attacked and taken by a crocodile.

A Mother’s Heartbreaking Account

Recalling the harrowing moment, Auma tearfully stated, “I arrived at the scene and saw my son helplessly trapped between the merciless jaws of the crocodile. The reptile swiftly dashed towards the deeper side of the river, submerging itself along with my beloved boy.”

Desperate for help, Auma pleaded with a man standing on the opposite side of the river to come to her aid. However, the man declined, fearing for his own safety and the possibility of facing a similar crocodile attack.

As the commotion continued, concerned neighbors who had heard the distressing cries rushed to the scene, hoping to lend their assistance. They valiantly attempted to trace the path of the crocodile, hoping to find any trace of the young boy. Despite their determined efforts, they were unable to locate the elusive reptile, leaving the residents with no choice but to await the intervention of the Kenya Wildlife Services authorities.

KWS Recovery Efforts

Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS), renowned for their expertise in wildlife conservation and management, swiftly responded to the tragic incident. The KWS officers meticulously dissected the crocodile that had claimed the life of the innocent young boy along the River Kuja. Their professionalism and dedication allowed them to successfully recover the body, bringing some closure to the grieving family.

The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers posed by wildlife in certain areas of Kenya. The KWS continues to work tirelessly to minimize human-wildlife conflicts and ensure the safety of local communities.

As the community mourns the loss of young FO, this unfortunate incident serves as a call for increased awareness and precautions when interacting with wildlife.

Let us honor the memory of FO and work together to create a safer future for all, where humans and wildlife can coexist peacefully.
