Man Fatally Stabbed During Violent Clash at Second Division Football Match in Argentina

Buenos Aires, February 4, 2024 – A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday during a Second Division football match between Chacarita Juniors and Maipú in Argentina, resulting in the loss of a 43-year-old man’s life. The violent confrontation took place amidst fervent supporters of the local club Chacarita Juniors in the Popular Tribune area, commonly known as ‘La Famosa.’

Reports suggest that tensions escalated outside the stadium premises, leading to a physical altercation. Unfortunately, one individual sustained a fatal stab wound to the chest, identified as Jorge Daniel Durán. Despite swift transportation to a nearby hospital, Durán’s life could not be saved.

The match, which was temporarily halted for approximately 20 minutes, eventually resumed and concluded with a 2-0 victory for the home team. Matías Pisano scored the first goal in the 18th minute from a penalty kick, followed by Ramiro Costa netting the second goal in injury time of the first half.

Expressing deep regret over the tragic incident, the hosts Chacarita Juniors conveyed their condolences through their official social media channels. To facilitate the investigation, the club granted the police access to the stadium’s security cameras, aiming to determine the sequence of events that led to the unfortunate outcome.

In their official statement, Chacarita Juniors assured full cooperation with the authorities and pledged to take strict action against any club member found to be involved in the incident. Emphasizing that such acts are contradictory to the club’s core values, they condemned the violence unequivocally.

Regrettably, violence has become an all-too-familiar issue in Argentine football. Merely last weekend, another clash between fans occurred when River Plate’s ‘barra brava’ engaged in a confrontation with supporters of Argentinos Juniors. Although this particular altercation did not result in any fatalities, at least 30 individuals were initially detained. Subsequently, they were released, but with a four-year ban on entering any soccer field.

It is imperative that measures are put in place to address the recurring issue of violence in Argentine football. The authorities, along with the respective clubs, need to work collectively to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all football enthusiasts. EFE
