Suspect Arrested After Fleeing Traffic Stop in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police have apprehended a 33-year-old parole fugitive who attempted to escape from a traffic stop, endangering law enforcement personnel.

According to a news release from the Salt Lake City Police Department (SLCPD), a detective narrowly avoided injury after swiftly moving away from the path of the suspect’s vehicle.

The incident occurred at around 1:29 a.m. when officers pulled over a vehicle near 950 W. 200 South. Upon approaching the driver, later identified as Girato Kamilo Phillip, the officers were provided with false information. Instructed to exit the car, Phillip instead accelerated and fled the scene, as stated in the news release.

A short while later, Phillip crashed into a building located at 161 S. Pueblo Street. The impact caused significant damage to both the suspect’s vehicle and the structure, but fortunately, no injuries were reported among the occupants of the building.

Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown emphasized the importance of officers maintaining situational awareness during traffic stops. He said, “Traffic stops can escalate rapidly, posing serious threats to our officers’ safety. This incident highlights the physical agility and constant vigilance required of our officers to react swiftly in order to protect themselves and our community.”

Both Phillip and a passenger in the suspect’s vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision.

Phillip has since been taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on multiple charges. These include investigation of failing to comply with an officer’s signal to stop, aggravated assault, providing false information with the intent to deceive, reckless driving, operating a vehicle without insurance, and driving with a suspended license.

Authorities are relieved that the situation was resolved without further harm to the public or law enforcement personnel. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks officers face daily while carrying out their duties to protect the community.
