A 13-year-old boy from Denver, Colorado, has been taken into custody after allegedly shooting and killing a 60-year-old man during an argument on a bus. The incident occurred when the victim’s leg was blocking the aisle, according to authorities.

The Denver Police Department (DPD) announced on Friday that the teenager, whose identity remains undisclosed, was arrested in connection with the fatal shooting that took place on January 27. The incident occurred at the intersection of South Federal Boulevard and West Mississippi Avenue around 6:41 p.m. local time.

Investigations by the police have revealed that a verbal exchange between the suspect and the victim regarding the leg blocking the aisle led to the shooting. Following the incident, the victim was rushed to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The victim has been identified as Richard Sanchez, a grandfather, according to reports from The Denver Post and KDVR, citing family members. Another individual sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.

The shooting occurred on a Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus, and the RTD has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Joseph Chavez, Sanchez’s grandson, expressed his disbelief and heartbreak over his grandfather’s death. He described his grandfather as a genuinely happy person and emphasized the devastating impact of losing him.

Sanchez’s family revealed that they were unaware of his death until they reported him missing to the police several days later. Chavez expressed frustration and sorrow at the fact that nobody was with his grandfather during his final moments.

The tragic incident has shocked the community, raising concerns about safety on public transportation. Authorities are working diligently to determine the appropriate charges for the teenage suspect involved.
