The incident took place on January 8, around 7:10 p.m., on Carl Street in Pacoima, just northeast of San Fernando Housing. The victim’s family told KTLA that the victim and his friend had finished playing basketball when the shooting occurred.
According to the police, the victims were approached by several suspects in a silver Dodge Charger as they were walking on Carl Street. After a brief conversation with the individuals in the car, the driver got out and began shooting at the teens. Two additional suspects also exited the vehicle and started firing at the victims.
During the attack, one of the victims, identified as Elmer Quintanilla, fell to the ground. The driver of the Charger then stood over him and continued to shoot multiple rounds at him. The second victim, who was shot in the leg, managed to escape. The suspects fled the scene.
Paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived at the scene and rushed Quintanilla to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The other victim, who was taken to the hospital by family members, is expected to recover from his injuries.
The investigation into the fatal shooting was aided by surveillance cameras, which played a crucial role in identifying the suspects. The police conducted searches at multiple residences, resulting in the recovery of several firearms and other important evidence. As a result, all suspects involved in the shooting have been arrested.
The three adult suspects, Giovanny Montesdeoca, Jose Espinoza, and two unidentified juveniles known only as Gomez and Lopez, are facing charges of murder and attempted murder. They were arrested on January 26 and January 29, respectively. One of the juvenile suspects will be tried as an adult.
During a news conference about the arrests, family members of Quintanilla declined to speak on camera but described him as a funny kid who loved sports and spending time with his nieces and nephews.
The Los Angeles Police Department is urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact LAPD Valley Bureau Detectives or submit anonymous tips through L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers.
