A former Winnipeg man, Kevin Queau, has been charged with second-degree murder in the 2007 cold-case death of Crystal Saunders. Court records and interviews with the Free Press reveal that Queau has a history of physical and sexual violence against women.

Queau, 42, was sentenced to five years in prison in Vancouver for choking two women, one of whom was also sexually assaulted, about six years after the slaying in Manitoba. A former intimate partner in Winnipeg told the Free Press that Queau once grabbed her neck during sex prior to 2007. Additionally, a friend in Vancouver alleged that Queau choked a partner in the city following his release from prison.

The woman who had an intimate relationship with Queau said that he removed his hand when she told him “absolutely not.” She described the incident as a “kinky thing he was into” and said she was sickened and freaked out after learning about Queau’s recent arrest and convictions in British Columbia.

Saunders, 24, was last seen alive by an on-duty Winnipeg police officer in April 2007. Her body was found in a ditch near St. Ambroise, about 75 kilometers northwest of Winnipeg, the next morning by an off-duty RCMP officer. RCMP said that Queau and Saunders were in contact the night she was last seen.

Saunders’ mother, Sandra, told the Free Press in 2007 that her daughter struggled with drug addiction and was forced into the sex trade. Police said that technological advancements allowed previously insufficient DNA found on Saunders’ remains to be entered into the National DNA Data Bank in 2014. A DNA match was linked to Queau through crimes he was involved in outside Manitoba.

Queau graduated from St. Paul’s High School around 1999 and briefly attended the University of Manitoba. He worked in a restaurant kitchen before moving into self-employed construction. He recently got married and has a daughter from a previous relationship.

In 2012, Queau pleaded guilty to five counts of forgery and two counts of theft under $5,000. He was given a suspended sentence, probation, and ordered to pay restitution. Vancouver provincial court documents show that he also pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a woman in 2013 and to aggravated assault in 2014. He was sentenced to five years and placed on the sex offender registry for life.

Queau’s friends in Vancouver described him as cocky and chauvinistic, using women and money to prop himself up. They also mentioned that he worked as a construction safety officer and ran his own construction firm and boat tours on the side.

Queau’s arrest in Saunders’ slaying has shocked those who knew him, especially given his history of violence against women. He remains in custody as efforts are made to bring him to Winnipeg for a court appearance. RCMP is also investigating whether he may be connected to any other unsolved crimes..
