Manchester United’s search for a top-class right winger continues to hit a roadblock, as none of the three players tried in the position have been able to impress.
Manager Erik ten Hag had a promising option in Jadon Sancho, but the English winger encountered some issues and eventually moved to Dortmund.
Despite having several attacking options at his disposal, including Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Bruno Fernandes, ten Hag has struggled to find the right combination on the right wing.
Four Uncertain Options •
Ten Hag’s initial plan was to rely on Antony as his main right winger. However, the Brazilian’s performances have been below par, and he has also faced personal issues and missed several matches.
Ten Hag has also experimented with Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho in the right winger role. However, it is not their natural position, as they are more comfortable playing on the left wing.
According to Whoscored, Bruno Fernandes has been deployed as a left winger on seven occasions. However, his performance has been much better when playing as an attacking midfielder.
A New Candidate for the Right Wing •
Antony’s goal against Newport County holds significant meaning. While it was against a League Two team, it could serve as a confidence boost for the Brazilian to reach his best form.
While waiting for Antony to find consistency, ten Hag has another option for the right winger position in Amad Diallo.
The Ivorian winger suffered an injury at the start of the season but has been recovering well and is believed to be a viable option in the attack. Diallo has shown his quality during a loan spell at Sunderland in the 2022/2023 season.
