Nevada law enforcement officials have made a significant breakthrough in two cold cases that have remained unsolved for nearly 16 years apart. Through advancements in DNA technology, a man has been linked to murders in both Las Vegas and Westminster, Colorado.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police held a press conference to announce the closure of these cases. The first murder occurred in May 1991 when officers responded to reports of a suspicious death in an apartment on Monroe Avenue. Sherrie Bridgewater, 31 years old at the time, was found sexually assaulted and murdered by strangulation. Despite the efforts of the homicide investigation team, the case remained unsolved.

In 2013, the department submitted a sexual assault kit from the Bridgewater case for DNA examination. This examination allowed detectives to develop a suspect profile, but they were unable to identify the individual. However, a breakthrough came when the DNA profile matched a second unsolved murder in Westminster, Colorado from December 1975. Teree Becker was found dead in a field, also sexually assaulted and murdered by strangulation.

Both police agencies had the same suspect profile but lacked the technology to identify the suspect. In 2018, they collaborated to submit the cases for forensic genealogy. Four years later, in 2022, the suspect was identified as Thomas Martin Elliott.

RELATED STORIES

Thomas Martin Elliott died in 1991 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Las Vegas. In order to confirm his involvement in the murders, his body was exhumed for DNA extraction. The cost of this process was covered by the Vegas Justice League, a collaborative effort between both police agencies.

In October 2023, Elliott’s remains were exhumed, and tissue and bone samples were obtained and sent to a lab. The lab successfully extracted a DNA sample, which was then compared to both cases. The results were a 100% match, confirming Elliott’s responsibility for both murders.

This breakthrough is a testament to the advancements in DNA technology and the persistence of law enforcement agencies in solving cold cases.
