TAMPA, Fla. – A 4-year-old girl was injured in a shooting incident on Tuesday in west-central Florida, believed to be a result of road rage. The authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with the incident, according to reports.

The suspect, James David Jackson, a 34-year-old resident of Tampa, was arrested late Tuesday. He is now facing multiple charges, including attempted murder, great bodily harm (firearm), aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery, and possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony, among others, as per the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office online booking records.

The incident took place in Tampa’s 3000 block of North 50th Street around 6:13 p.m. EST. The Tampa Police Department responded to a call regarding a shooting. Jackson, driving a white Kia Optima, allegedly became enraged with the female driver of a white Chevrolet sedan.

At a red traffic light, Jackson reportedly pulled up next to the sedan and fired multiple shots from his open passenger window towards the vehicle. The Chevrolet sedan was occupied by a female driver in her early 30s, an adult male passenger in his 20s, and two children seated in the rear. Tragically, one of the bullets struck the 4-year-old girl, identified as the driver’s daughter. Thankfully, the other child, an 8-year-old girl, escaped unharmed.

The injured child was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in stable condition, with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

With the help of their helicopter, the police were able to track Jackson’s vehicle and apprehend him shortly after the shooting. During the arrest, law enforcement recovered a firearm that had been discarded from the Optima.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear; however, the police believe it stemmed from a road rage incident that occurred nearby.

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed his sympathy for the injured girl and her family, stating, “Our thoughts are with the little girl who was injured in this senseless act, and our victim’s advocate will be working closely with the family to ensure they are connected to any resources they may need. Thanks to the swift efforts taken by all the responding and investigating officers, the suspect was quickly taken off the street before he could harm another member of our community.”

According to reports, Jackson has a criminal history and has served multiple terms in a Florida state prison for charges including attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery, illegal possession of a firearm, and aggravated battery. He was released in 2019 after serving approximately a year for the aggravated battery charge.

In conclusion, this shocking incident highlights the dangers of road rage and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives. The authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and the victim’s family will receive support during this challenging time..
