Chandigarh: A Nihang Sikh, who brutally murdered a 26-year-old man two weeks ago in Chandigarh, did so for the sole purpose of gaining “publicity and glory,” according to the police. The accused has now been charged with murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), along with other related offenses, as confirmed by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vatsala Gupta from Kapurthala.

The victim, identified as Vishal Kapoor, had returned to Phagwara in search of the house where he had lived with his grandmother during his childhood. Unfortunately, he fell victim to Singh’s merciless act in the early hours of 16th December.

Prior to the heinous crime, Singh recorded a video of Vishal “confessing” to committing sacrilege on the orders of an individual named Sukhi at a gurdwara. Subsequently, Singh posted another video on social media, openly admitting to the murder. He then sought refuge in one of the gurdwara rooms, refusing to surrender until other Nihang Sikhs arrived to honor him. The police apprehended him shortly after.

Vishal’s grandmother had been his primary caregiver after the demise of his father. However, with her passing, Vishal was left to fend for himself. The family resided in a rented accommodation in Phagwara.

According to the authorities, Vishal was a vulnerable individual who required constant support. After the demise of his relatives, Vishal moved to Delhi and spent several years with a non-governmental organization. However, he recently went missing from the NGO. It was later discovered that he sought shelter at the Chaura Khooh gurdwara in Phagwara, possibly to escape the cold weather.

Sources within the police revealed that Vishal was desperately seeking a roof over his head. Unfortunately, Singh happened to be present at the gurdwara that fateful night and perceived Vishal as a threat. Singh attacked him, forcing Vishal to confess on camera before ultimately taking his life.

The police stated that Singh had already killed Vishal before they could intervene. Singh is currently in police custody at the Phagwara City police station. Additionally, he tested positive for drugs during a medical examination following the murder.

Meanwhile, no one initially stepped forward to claim Vishal’s body. After an extensive search, the police managed to locate a distant relative who ultimately claimed the body for cremation.

Cases against Singh are not new. The first case dates back to 2012 when he was charged under various sections of the Arms Act in Patiala. In 2013, two separate cases were registered against him in Ludhiana, both related to theft, and another under the Arms Act. Two additional cases were filed in 2016 for acts of violence, also in Ludhiana. In 2021, he faced charges under the Information Technology Act in Ludhiana, followed by another case for violence in Amritsar in January of the same year. Notably, a week prior to the murder on 16th January, Singh, also known as Mangu Math, posted a video on Facebook showing a verbal altercation with the police at Ludhiana’s Akal market.

In conclusion, the tragic murder of Vishal Kapoor by a Nihang Sikh highlights the brutal lengths some individuals are willing to go for personal gain and notoriety. The police have ensured that the accused will face justice for his heinous act, while the victim’s body has been laid to rest after a lengthy search for a relative to claim it.
