Vivek Saini, a 25-year-old Indian student, immigrated to the United States over two years ago in search of better opportunities to support his family in Haryana, India. He had completed his Bachelor’s in Computer Science from Chandigarh University and was pursuing a Master’s degree in Business Administration at Alabama University. Saini was described as a brilliant student by his cousin, Simran, who spoke with India Today. In addition to his studies, Saini worked part-time at the Chevron Food Mart in Lithonia, Georgia.

The gruesome murder

Tragically, Saini’s life was cut short by a 53-year-old homeless man named Juan Faulkner, whom he had been helping for several days. Faulkner had been offered shelter at the convenience store where Saini worked. On January 16th, Saini asked Faulkner to leave the store, leading to a violent attack. Faulkner brutally assaulted Saini with a hammer, striking him nearly 50 times. Saini suffered severe head trauma and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The aftermath

Faulkner was arrested by the DeKalb County police after they found him standing over Saini’s blood-covered body with a hammer in his hand. The police also recovered two knives and another hammer from Faulkner. He is currently in custody on charges of malice, murder, and interference with government property. Saini’s body was returned to India, where his grieving parents performed his last rites.

India condemns the murder

The Consulate General of India in Atlanta expressed deep anguish over the “brutal and heinous” murder of Vivek Saini. They condemned the attack in the strongest terms and confirmed that the US authorities have arrested the accused and are investigating the case. The Consulate General provided all necessary assistance to Saini’s family and facilitated the repatriation of his mortal remains to India.

Another Indian student found dead

In another tragic incident, Neel Acharya, a student at Purdue University, was found dead. Acharya had been reported missing and was discovered by the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office. The Indian student community in America is devastated by this loss.

Similar crimes against Indian students in the US

Unfortunately, crimes against Indian students in the US have been on the rise in recent years. In October 2023, Varun Raj Pucha, a Computer Science student at Valparaiso University, was stabbed to death by a fellow gymgoer. In November, Aaditya Adlakha, a PhD student at the University of Cincinnati Medical School, was shot dead in his car. These incidents highlight the growing concern for the safety of Indian students studying abroad.

Rising hate crimes in the US

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reported an increase in hate crimes in the US in 2022. Crimes motivated by bias towards race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, gender, and gender identity reached 11,643 incidents. Anti-Black/anti-African-American hate crimes topped the list, followed by incidents against Jews. Experts believe that economic insecurity and stagnant growth rates contribute to the rise in hate crimes.

In conclusion, the tragic murder of Vivek Saini highlights the need for increased safety measures and awareness for Indian students studying abroad. The Indian community and authorities are working together to address these concerns and ensure justice for the victims..
