Man Caught Smuggling Methamphetamine Disguised as Baby Diapers in South Kalimantan

A 43-year-old man was apprehended by South Kalimantan police for attempting to smuggle 52 packs of methamphetamine weighing approximately 5.3 kilograms. The drugs were cleverly concealed inside a plastic bag of baby diapers. The suspect, identified as NI, was caught on the morning of January 25, 2024, while transporting the illegal substances on a motorcycle to Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan.

The arrest took place as NI’s motorcycle was passing through Ahmad Yani Road KM 12,700 of Gambut sub-district, Banjar district, according to the South Kalimantan Police’s narcotics crime investigation director, Sen.Coms Kelana Jaya.

NI, a resident of Banjarmasin, is believed to be associated with the drug ring in West Kalimantan’s Pontianak. The South Kalimantan police had received prior information about the Pontianak drug syndicate planning a drug delivery, leading them to conduct a surveillance operation for several days before apprehending NI.

Authorities are now focused on uncovering NI’s networks and further investigating his case. South Kalimantan has remained vulnerable to drug trafficking operations, as recently highlighted by the confiscation of 35kg of crystal methamphetamine from a truck driver in January 2023.

The truck driver, identified as RS, was arrested after arriving at Banjarmasin city’s Trisakti Port from Surabaya, East Java. The drugs were cleverly packed into 35 Chinese tea bags mixed with food products. The value of the drug trade in Indonesia is estimated to have reached nearly Rp66 trillion, with the number of drug trafficking cases continuing to rise.

Indonesia is considered a potential market by domestic and transnational drug dealers due to its vast population and millions of drug users. A joint survey conducted by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) and the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) in 2019 revealed that there are over 3.4 million drug users in Indonesia.

The survey, conducted in 34 provinces, indicated that approximately 180 out of every 10,000 Indonesians between the ages of 15 and 64 were addicted to drugs. Drug users come from various communities, socioeconomic backgrounds, and cultural settings, indicating that addiction does not discriminate.
