A 27-year-old man in Georgia has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his self-described “best friend” during a heated argument over a social media post. Malik Jeremiah Mason shot and fatally wounded 25-year-old Cha’leb Christopher Brown after being referred to as a “rat” in the post. The sentencing was carried out by Douglas County Superior Court Judge Cynthia Adams, who also added an additional 16 years to Mason’s sentence, as announced by authorities.

Mason was found guilty on two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, third-degree cruelty to children, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by first offender probationer. The verdict was reached by a jury last week.

According to a news release from the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, the incident took place on November 6, 2020, at an apartment complex on Ravenwood Court. Law enforcement authorities responded to an emergency call reporting a shooting. Upon arrival, first responders found Brown on the ground with a single gunshot wound to the neck. Despite efforts by emergency medical workers, Brown succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses at the scene immediately identified Mason as the shooter. During the trial, multiple individuals testified to witnessing Mason shoot and kill Brown.

“Mason and his girlfriend arrived at the scene a few minutes prior to the shooting and engaged in a heated conversation with the victim in the parking lot of the apartment complex,” the news release stated. “The argument escalated due to a social media post that labeled Mason as a ‘rat,’ insinuating that he was cooperating with law enforcement. As tensions rose, Mason shot the unarmed victim in the neck.”

Prosecutors revealed that Mason was aware of the presence of a minor child who witnessed the shooting when he pulled the trigger.

After the murder, Mason and his girlfriend fled the scene in his vehicle. However, authorities were able to track down Mason in Alabama a few days later, leading to his arrest.

In a surprising turn of events, Mason addressed the court during his sentencing hearing, referring to Brown as his “best friend.” However, he took no responsibility for his actions or the events that led to Brown’s death, according to prosecutors.

“It’s difficult to comprehend how two young men who were friends could let a social media post escalate to the point of murder,” said Douglas County District Attorney Dalia Racine in a statement following the sentencing hearing. “Too often, people fail to recognize the potential consequences of their actions in the real world when influenced by the recklessness of the virtual world. Unfortunately, in cases like this, the wake-up call can be disastrous and devastating for our families and communities.”

Mason’s then-girlfriend, Destiny Biana Henry, was also arrested in connection with the shooting. Court records indicate that she reached an agreement with prosecutors, pleading guilty to one count of hindering the apprehension of a criminal. In exchange, she agreed to testify against Mason. The sentencing hearing for Henry has yet to be scheduled, as reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
