Police Investigate Online “Suicide Kit” Deaths in Scotland

Concerns Raised Over Deaths Linked to Canadian Websites

Authorities in Scotland are currently investigating whether any deaths in the country can be attributed to the purchase of “suicide kits” from Canadian websites. The National Crime Agency has reported that nearly 300 individuals in the UK have bought these products, with 93 resulting in fatalities.

Local police forces, including those in Scotland, are conducting regular welfare checks on individuals who are believed to have purchased these kits. Unfortunately, one of the victims is 22-year-old Tom Parfett, a student at St Andrews University in Fife, who died after consuming a lethal substance obtained from a Canadian website allegedly operated by Kenneth Law.

Tom’s father, David, expressed his determination to understand how his son came across the suicide kit and managed to purchase it. His investigation led him to an online forum where individuals openly discuss death and encourage others to take their own lives.

The National Crime Agency received intelligence in April 2023 regarding the purchase of suicide-assisting products from Canadian websites. Over a two-year period leading up to April 2023, more than 270 individuals in the UK were identified as having bought these products.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed that they are working with partner agencies to investigate this matter, but the investigation is still at an early stage.

Canadian Authorities Also Investigating Deaths Linked to Website

Canadian authorities have also launched investigations into deaths related to the same website. Kenneth Law, who is believed to be the operator of the website, has been in custody since May of last year. He currently faces 14 charges of second-degree murder and abetting suicide.

Reports from Canada suggest that at least one of these charges will be upgraded to first-degree murder, which carries an automatic jail sentence without the possibility of parole for 25 years. Police strongly suspect that Law is the individual responsible for the website linked to the suicides in the UK, including Tom Parfett.

Craig Turner, the deputy director of the National Crime Agency, expressed condolences to the loved ones of the victims and assured them that specially trained officers are providing support. In collaboration with the Crown Prosecution Service, the NCA has launched an investigation into potential criminal offenses committed in the UK.
