Two Palm Bay Police Officers Shot by Gunman, Recovering in Hospital

Two Palm Bay police officers are currently recovering in the hospital after being shot by a gunman on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, both the gunman and a civilian were killed in the incident.

Domestic Disturbance Leads to Gunfire

The incident occurred on the 400 block of Forgal Avenue NE in Palm Bay. Officers were called to the scene around 2:07 p.m. in response to a domestic disturbance. Upon their arrival, they encountered an armed man identified as 24-year-old Brandon Kapas.

According to Palm Bay Police Chief Mario Augello, Kapas was leaving the residence when the officers arrived and refused to comply with verbal commands. This led to an exchange of gunfire between Kapas and the officers, resulting in two officers being injured.

Officers Expected to Survive

Thankfully, both injured officers are currently being treated and are expected to survive their injuries. Chief Augello expressed his gratitude for their dedication to protecting and serving the community, stating, “We will not tolerate anybody raising their guns or any type of lethal force or aggression towards our police officers.”

Gunman Kills Civilian Before Police Arrival

Prior to the arrival of the officers, Kapas had already killed a civilian. The exact circumstances surrounding the civilian’s death are still under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Following the exchange of gunfire, Kapas was pursued by additional officers and was eventually shot and killed by Palm Bay police. The incident prompted a large response from several law enforcement agencies, with police blocking off several blocks of Emerson Drive between Americana Boulevard and Forest Street NE.
