MPD Arrests Suspect Involved in Shooting Incident

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has announced the arrest of an individual involved in a shooting incident that occurred in Southeast, DC. The incident took place on Friday, January 19, 2024, at approximately 1:32 p.m. The victim was approached by two suspects at the intersection of A Street and 16th Street, Southeast. One of the suspects displayed a handgun and shot the victim. Afterward, the suspects proceeded to search the victim’s pockets before fleeing the scene. The victim was then transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Shortly after the incident, Fourth District officers received information regarding an adult male who had arrived at a local hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Following an investigation by MPD detectives, it was determined that the adult male was one of the suspects involved in the shooting. On Friday, January 19, 2024, 19-year-old Christ Tchakounte, a resident of Hyattsville, MD, was arrested and charged with Assault with Intent to Rob while Armed (Gun).


MPD Seeks Assistance in Identifying Robbery Suspect

The First District Detectives of the Metropolitan Police Department are seeking the community’s help in identifying a suspect responsible for a robbery and car theft incident. The incident occurred in the Unit block of Massachusetts Avenue, Northeast on Sunday, January 21, 2024, at approximately 9:40 p.m.

According to reports, the suspect approached the victim at the specified location and forcefully pushed them to the ground. The suspect then proceeded to steal the victim’s car keys and drove away in their vehicle. Surveillance cameras in the vicinity captured images of the suspect, which can be seen in the photo on the right.

MPD Apprehends Two Juveniles Involved in Attempted Robbery

In a separate incident, First District detectives have successfully arrested two juveniles who attempted to rob a woman in the 500 block of 10th Street, Northeast. The incident occurred on Friday, January 26, 2024, at approximately 12:40 a.m.

The suspects approached the woman at the specified location, with one of them assaulting her in an attempt to grab her purse. In self-defense, the victim pepper-sprayed one of the suspects. The other suspect then brandished a knife and made multiple lunges at the victim. Fortunately, the victim managed to contact 911, leading to the prompt arrival and arrest of both suspects. The arrested individuals were identified as a 9-year-old male and a 13-year-old male, both residents of Northeast, DC. They have been charged with Assault with Intent to Commit Robbery While Armed (Knife).

MPD Makes Second Arrest in Mother’s Day Murder of 10-Year-Old Girl

The Homicide Branch of the Metropolitan Police Department has made a second arrest in connection with the tragic Mother’s Day shooting that claimed the life of a 10-year-old girl. The incident occurred on May 14, 2023, at approximately 9:14 p.m. in the 3700 block of Hayes Street, Northeast.

Upon responding to reports of gunshots, Sixth District Officers discovered evidence of a shooting at the scene. Shortly after, 10-year-old Arianna Davis, a resident of Northeast, DC, was brought to a DC Fire and EMS station with gunshot injuries. Despite medical efforts, Arianna succumbed to her injuries on May 17, 2023.

Investigations revealed that Arianna was an innocent passenger in a car with her family when she was tragically struck by a stray bullet. Following the incident, the community rallied together, providing numerous tips and video evidence that proved invaluable in identifying the suspects. Previously, on September 18, 2023, a 19-year-old man from Southeast, DC, was arrested and charged with First-Degree Murder while Armed.

On Tuesday, January 23, 2024, 19-year-old Dallas McKinney, also from Southeast, DC, was transported from DC Jail to the Homicide Branch based on a DC Superior Court arrest warrant. McKinney now faces charges of First-Degree Murder while Armed.


Three MPD Members Complete Emergence Program at Naval Postgraduate School

Three members of the Metropolitan Police Department recently concluded their participation in the Emergence Program at the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security (CHDS). This notable achievement was celebrated during their graduation from the seven-month program on Friday, January 19, 2024.

The three individuals, namely Detective Nicholas Koven, Detective Anthony Padilla, and Marketing Specialist Carly Royden, were among twenty-nine professionals from various fields, including emergency management, education, law enforcement, fire service, homeland security, public health, and government, who participated in the program.

Throughout the program, Koven, Padilla, and Royden had the opportunity to enhance their leadership and policy skills while focusing on current policy, strategy, and organizational design challenges. Chief Pamela A. Smith congratulated the three participants on their remarkable achievement and emphasized the program’s significance in preparing MPD members to address emerging security trends in the community.
