New Delhi: In a shocking incident, a head constable of the Delhi traffic police was dragged on the bonnet of a car for approximately 400 metres in Delhi Cantt. The incident occurred when the constable asked the driver to provide the vehicle’s documents. The accused has been arrested and charged with attempted murder, according to the police.
The victim, identified as Balwant Singh, is posted at the IGIA traffic circle. The incident took place on Saturday at 10:10 am. Singh, along with assistant sub-inspector Hanuman Sahai, was issuing challans for improper parking on the road connecting Terminal 1 to Mehram Nagar, as reported by an officer.
When Singh asked one of the vehicle’s drivers to show him the car documents, the driver pretended to retrieve them. However, he got inside the car, started the engine, and sped away. Sahai managed to avoid being hit, but Singh was struck and flung onto the bonnet. The driver then dragged him for 400 metres, according to the police.
Fortunately, another driver stopped his car in front of the offending vehicle, allowing the police to catch the accused. The accused has been identified as Rashid Ali, a 43-year-old native of Meerut. During the investigation, Rashid revealed that he had been previously challaned by traffic cops, which infuriated him. When he was caught again, his anger led him to drag the head constable.
This incident is not the first of its kind. In February of last year, a 34-year-old traffic police head constable was also dragged on the bonnet of a car in Shalimar Bagh when he attempted to stop a vehicle allegedly driven by a juvenile.
This incident highlights the dangers faced by traffic police officers who work tirelessly to maintain law and order on the roads. It serves as a reminder of the need for strict enforcement of traffic rules and regulations to ensure the safety of both law enforcement officials and the general public.
