British BASE Jumper Dies in Thailand after Parachute Malfunction

BANGKOK (CNN) — A tragic incident occurred in Thailand as a British BASE jumper lost his life after his parachute failed to open during a jump from an apartment building, according to local police reports.

The accident took place in the popular beachside resort city of Pattaya, where authorities were alerted to the incident at a residential complex on Saturday evening around 6 p.m, revealed Police Colonel Nawin Sinthurat.

The victim has been identified as Nathy Odinson, a 33-year-old British male citizen. Odinson’s social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram showcased numerous photographs capturing his passion for skydiving and BASE jumping – an adrenaline-fueled extreme sport where enthusiasts leap from buildings, antennae, bridges, and cliffs.

According to Sinthurat, Odinson initiated the fatal jump from the 29th floor of the 32-story building. The height of the jump clearly added to the inherent risks associated with BASE jumping.

Investigations have revealed that Odinson was actively involved in a parachute kit business for approximately a decade. His body was identified by his father, who has been residing in Thailand for the past 20 years.

Authorities confirm that a parachute backpack was still attached to Odinson’s body, indicating that the malfunction likely occurred within the parachute kit itself. “This was undoubtedly an accident,” stated Sinthurat.

During the incident, there was another individual present, identified as a friend of Odinson, who was filming the jump. “He was capturing the moment,” added Sinthurat.

Ongoing investigations are focused on determining whether Odinson had previously used the same location for parachute jumps. Additionally, authorities have managed to recover CCTV footage, which may provide further insights into the incident.

A spokesperson from the UK Foreign Office expressed their condolences and stated, “We are providing support to the family of the British man who tragically lost his life in Thailand. We are also in contact with the local authorities.”

CNN has reached out to the British Embassy in Bangkok for additional comments.
