British BASE Jumper Dies in Tragic Accident in Thailand

By Kocha Olarn and Heather Chen, CNN

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) — A British BASE jumper tragically lost his life in Thailand when his parachute failed to open during a jump from an apartment building, according to local police reports obtained by CNN.

Authorities in the popular Thai beachside resort city of Pattaya were alerted to the incident, which occurred at a residential complex on Saturday evening around 6 p.m., as confirmed by Police Colonel Nawin Sinthurat.

The victim has been identified as Nathy Odinson, a 33-year-old British citizen. Odinson’s Facebook and Instagram accounts showcased his passion for extreme sports, including skydiving and BASE jumping, where enthusiasts leap from buildings, antennae, bridges, and cliffs.

According to Sinthurat, Odinson jumped from the 29th floor of the 32-story building. The British BASE jumper had been involved in the business of selling parachute kits for approximately 10 years. His body was identified by his father, who has been residing in Thailand for the past two decades.

Authorities have confirmed that a parachute backpack was still attached to Odinson’s body, indicating a likely parachute malfunction. “This was unquestionably an accident,” stated Sinthurat.

During the jump, there was another individual present, identified as a friend of Odinson’s, who was filming the jump. The police are currently conducting investigations to determine if Odinson had previously used the same location for his parachute jumps. Recovered CCTV footage will aid in the ongoing inquiry.

CNN has reached out to the British Foreign Office and the British Embassy in Bangkok for additional comments regarding this tragic incident.
