Avalanche Claims Life of Skier on Mount Temple, Lake Louise, Alberta

Avalanche Canada has confirmed that a tragic incident occurred on Friday, claiming the life of a skier on Mount Temple, the highest peak in the Lake Louise area of Alberta. The victim, a 32-year-old Saskatchewan resident, was struck by sluff – a small release of loose snow – from a rock face, causing him to lose his footing and fall a significant distance while ascending the mountain. Regrettably, his injuries sustained from the fall proved fatal.

The skier was part of a group of three individuals. Fortunately, the two other members of the party managed to descend safely, only to find their friend deceased upon reaching him. The incident was reported to the Lake Louise Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) at approximately 4:35 p.m. MT on Friday. In response, Parks Canada visitor safety and emergency crews promptly arrived at the scene to assess the situation.

The accident occurred in the Aemmer Couloir, a steep skiing line located on the north face of Mount Temple. The RCMP statement revealed that the victim appeared to have fallen while climbing this challenging route. Following the necessary procedures, the survivors were successfully evacuated from the area via helicopter. As the daylight dwindled, the deceased skier was carefully recovered using a sling.

The RCMP has confirmed that the next of kin of the deceased have been notified, and an ongoing investigation is underway. However, based on the available information, foul play is not suspected as a contributing factor in this tragic incident.
