Details of the Accident

Upon arrival at the scene, Indiana State Police discovered a man lying in a grass median near a semi-tanker and a disabled car on the shoulder. The man sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision.

The pedestrian involved in the incident has been identified as 22-year-old Jack Holdren from Williamsburg, Virginia. The driver of the semi-tanker has been identified as 64-year-old Leonard Murphy from Polk, Ohio.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by ISP, it appears that Holdren was in the process of changing a flat tire when his dog wandered into the roadway. In an attempt to retrieve his dog, Holdren ran into the path of the oncoming semi-tanker driven by Murphy.

Emergency medical services promptly arrived at the scene and transported Holdren to a hospital in Fort Wayne. Despite the severity of his injuries, the medics reported that Holdren remained “alert and conscious” during transportation. On the other hand, Murphy did not sustain any injuries in the incident. However, as per the requirements of the investigation, he was transferred to a hospital for a chemical test. It is important to note that the dog accompanying Holdren during the accident was not harmed.

Reminder from Indiana State Police

The Indiana State Police would like to take this opportunity to remind all drivers that in the event of a vehicle breakdown on a busy roadway, it is crucial to prioritize personal safety. Drivers should remain inside their vehicles with their seatbelts fastened and hazard lights activated. It is advised to contact emergency services by dialing 911 for immediate assistance.

Indiana State Police emphasized the importance of using emergency lighting to warn oncoming traffic of the roadside hazard. While getting a trooper on the scene may not guarantee complete safety while changing a tire, having emergency lighting in place is undoubtedly the preferred option, according to the Indiana State Police.
