Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Olmsted County Attorney’s Office has filed charges against a former Zumbrota woman accused of causing an injury crash while being intoxicated. The incident took place last fall and has resulted in the woman facing serious legal consequences.

According to the criminal complaint, which was filed on Friday in Olmsted County Court, the crash occurred on October 28. The incident took place along Highway 52, shortly before 3 a.m. The State Patrol crash report indicated that a car traveling north on Highway 52, near Chatfield, veered off the road and crashed into the ditch. As a result of the crash, 22-year-old Celina Sheda from Stewartville, who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained a back injury and was rushed to St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester for treatment.

The driver of the car was identified as 21-year-old Taylor Renee Benson, who currently resides in Florida. Fortunately, Benson only suffered minor injuries in the crash. The criminal complaint revealed that a passing motorist came across the accident and immediately alerted the State Patrol. The motorist then pulled both Benson and Sheda out of the vehicle, ensuring their safety.

During the subsequent investigation, Benson admitted to the trooper that she and Sheda had been drinking at a local bar and were heading towards Stewartville. Given the report of alcohol consumption and the nature of the crash, the trooper conducted field sobriety tests on Benson, which reportedly showed six impairment indicators, according to the complaint.

However, due to the injuries she sustained in the crash, Benson was unable to complete additional tests. She was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Olmsted County Jail. Law enforcement officials obtained a warrant to draw a blood sample from Benson, which later revealed her blood alcohol concentration to be 0.167. This measurement is more than twice the legal limit, as stated in the complaint.

On Friday, Benson was officially charged with two counts of gross misdemeanor criminal vehicular operation and two counts of gross misdemeanor DWI. She is scheduled to make her initial court appearance in March.
