Elderly Man Fatally Struck by Vehicle in Tragic Accident, Ocala Police Confirm

On Thursday night, a devastating incident occurred in Ocala, resulting in the tragic death of an elderly man who was hit by a vehicle. According to officials from the Ocala Police Department, the victim passed away on Friday afternoon at a local hospital. The incident has left the community in shock and mourning.

The accident took place at the intersection of North Magnolia Avenue and State Road 40. It was at this location that the elderly man, identified as Charles Ungermann, 89, from upstate New York, was struck by a pickup truck. The collision occurred as Charles and his wife, Geraldine Ungermann, 83, were attempting to cross SR 40 from north to south, against a crosswalk signal.

Unfortunately, Charles Ungermann succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital. His wife, Geraldine, was also injured in the accident and remains in serious condition at the same hospital.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that a 21-year-old woman from The Villages was driving a newer model Nissan Sentra westbound on SR 40 when the collision occurred. Witnesses state that the couple was crossing SR 40 from North Magnolia Avenue, disregarding the crosswalk signal. The Nissan struck both Charles and Geraldine Ungermann. Speed does not seem to have been a contributing factor, as confirmed by the witnesses.

The roadway where the accident took place has a speed limit of 30 mph. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, and the police have not made any arrests at this point.

This tragic event marks the second death within Ocala’s city limits this year. In 2023, the Ocala Police Department recorded a total of nine traffic-related fatalities, highlighting the importance of road safety in the community.
