LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Hawaii officials have identified the last of the 100 known victims of the devastating wildfire that engulfed Lahaina in August.

The process of identifying those who perished in this catastrophic wildfire, the deadliest in the United States in over a century, has been a lengthy and arduous one.

Teams of forensic experts and specially trained cadaver dogs meticulously combed through the ash and debris in search of the remains, some of which were potentially cremated due to the intensity of the fire.

Additionally, authorities collected DNA samples from the family members of the victims to aid in the identification process.

While the identification of all 100 known victims is now complete, it remains uncertain if there are any additional casualties that have yet to be discovered.

However, the number of unaccounted individuals has dwindled to just a few.
