Three Women Arrested in Connection with Berkeley Pepper-Spray Robberies

Three young women were apprehended this week in relation to a series of robberies in Berkeley where victims were targeted with pepper-spray, according to authorities.

The investigation by the Berkeley Police Department began last week after three incidents of pepper-spray robberies occurred within an hour on Thursday night. Additional reports of pepper-spray robberies in Berkeley were made on Monday and Tuesday nights.

The trio was arrested on Wednesday night in Union City while driving a car that had been stolen during a carjacking. This arrest came just hours after two more robbery incidents in Berkeley, which authorities believe are connected to the same group. These last two robberies, however, did not involve the use of pepper spray. They occurred at 1 p.m. in the 2300 block of Carleton Street and at 5:45 p.m. in the 3000 block of Acton Street.

Preliminary reports indicate that in one of these incidents, the victim sustained facial injuries after being punched, while in the other, the suspect grabbed the victim’s hair while stealing their bag.

The three women arrested have been identified as 20-year-olds Sabrina Wilson and Maya Bozeman-Stewart, and 19-year-old Nyanna Lanegreen. Information regarding their cities of residence was not available at the time of publication.

According to jail records, all three women face charges of carjacking, robbery, conspiracy, receiving stolen property, and possession of a stolen vehicle.

Sabrina Wilson has already been charged with two counts of robbery in relation to the incidents on Tuesday. She currently remains in custody, and no bail amount has been listed. Wilson is scheduled for arraignment on Friday morning at the Wiley Manuel Courthouse in Oakland.

The other two women were no longer in custody at the time of publication, as indicated by jail records.

The Berkeley Police Department has stated that the investigation is ongoing, and further work on the case is underway. The Scanner has reached out to the Berkeley police for additional information and will provide updates if available.

Robberies in Berkeley on a Decline

While Berkeley experienced a nearly 30% increase in robberies in 2023 compared to the previous year, the number of reported robberies this year has decreased. As of this week, the latest data from the Berkeley Police Department shows at least 16 robbery reports thus far.

Historically, Berkeley has averaged about one robbery per day. Although the number of reports has decreased, some of the recent robberies, including the pepper-spray robbery series, have involved more violence than usual, with female victims often targeted.

The first robbery of the year occurred on January 7, in the Claremont-Elmwood neighborhood near Brookside Drive. A teenager walking on Eton Avenue was attacked from behind by a man who threw her to the ground while attempting to steal her bag.

The following day, a teenager on a scooter managed to escape a robbery attempt by fleeing from a man armed with a gun near the UC Berkeley campus.

In mid-January, two female teenagers were arrested in connection with a violent carjacking on University Avenue. They were apprehended after being unable to operate a manual transmission vehicle, according to a witness.
