In a tragic incident that unfolded in South Carolina last August, a 20-year-old college student lost his life after mistakenly entering the wrong house. Nicholas Donofrio, a University of South Carolina student originally from Connecticut, was fatally shot after attempting to enter a residence on South Holly Street in Columbia. The events leading up to and immediately following the shooting were captured in two 911 calls.

In the first call made around 2 a.m., a distressed woman informs the dispatcher that someone is attempting to break into her house by banging on the front door. She frantically explains that her boyfriend had fired a shot through the door after the person broke a glass panel. The woman’s voice trembles with fear as she pleads for the authorities to arrive quickly.

Days later, the Columbia Police Department deemed the shooting justified under the state’s stand your ground law. Surveillance footage revealed that Donofrio had initially walked past the residence before returning and aggressively banging on the front door. He then broke through a glass window and attempted to unlock the doorknob, prompting the resident to defend himself with a single fatal shot.

In a second 911 call made around 3 a.m., friends of Donofrio expressed concern after he failed to arrive home in the Uber they had arranged for him. They reported that the Uber driver had seen him passed out on a front porch, but his roommates had not seen him at home. Worried for his safety, they filed a missing person report with the police.

The investigation into Donofrio’s death revealed that it was a justifiable homicide, according to the Protection of Persons and Property Act. The Columbia Police Department expressed condolences to the Donofrio family, acknowledging the heartbreaking nature of the case. Donofrio’s mother, Dina Barra Donofrio, described her son as an intelligent, compassionate, and deeply loved individual. The family expressed gratitude for the support they received from the community during this tragic time.

Nicholas Donofrio, a member of the Kappa Phi Sigma fraternity, was studying exercise science at the University of South Carolina. Known for his sense of humor and caring nature, he made a significant impact on those around him. In his memory, his fraternity brothers created a GoFundMe page to support his funeral services.
