Teenage Assailant Attacks People Power Party Rep. Bae Hyun-jin in Seoul

SEOUL – On Thursday, People Power Party Representative Bae Hyun-jin was brutally assaulted multiple times in the head by a teenage assailant in southern Seoul, according to the police.

The incident occurred around 5:18 p.m. when Bae was entering a building in Sinsa-dong. The police report stated that the assailant used a blunt object, identified as a stone, to carry out the attack.

Following the assault, the 41-year-old lawmaker was immediately rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

Although Bae sustained a “1-centimeter laceration” on her scalp, the doctor who briefed reporters confirmed that her injuries were not life-threatening. Bae remained conscious throughout her arrival at the hospital, and there were no indications of a concussion.

However, Bae has exhibited a minor symptom of internal bleeding in her brain, prompting the hospital to schedule a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan to assess her condition further.

After the attack, the police detained and booked the underage male assailant. Due to his age, key details about his identity, including his name, will be legally withheld. The police are currently in the process of interrogating him to ascertain his motive for the assault.

According to the authorities, the suspect approached Bae and began repeatedly striking her in the head with the blunt object, specifically targeting her after confirming her identity as Bae Hyun-jin.

This incident comes less than a month after the stabbing of Democratic Party of Korea Chair Lee Jae-myung’s neck by a 67-year-old man in Busan. The recent attacks have raised concerns about the safety of political figures during street campaigns leading up to the general election scheduled for April.

In response to the assault, People Power Party Interim Chair Han Dong-hoon visited Bae at the hospital, urging a thorough investigation and the imposition of severe punishment on the assailant.

Expressing his wishes for Bae’s speedy recovery, Lee Jae-myung took to Facebook, condemning “any form of political terrorism.”
