Richmond Woman Receives 28-Year Prison Sentence for 2018 Homicide

Richmond Woman Sentenced

RICHMOND, Ind. — Lamita Travonne Lesha Vansickle, a 33-year-old woman from Richmond, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit murder. The conviction stems from a 2018 homicide case that shocked the community.

Vansickle entered her guilty plea in Wayne Superior Court 2, acknowledging her involvement in the crime. Conspiracy to commit murder is a Level 1 felony in Indiana, carrying a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Gregory Horn imposed a 30-year prison term, with two years suspended. Vansickle was also given credit for the 253 days she had already spent in the Wayne County jail.

The murder victim, Jason Lewis, a 27-year-old man from Richmond, was found shot to death in the parking lot of a southside apartment complex in August 2018. Witnesses reported that Lewis had been chased by his assailant before being shot multiple times.

Michael Rashuan Carr, aged 33, was previously found guilty of the murder in May last year. Carr, who had a history of drug-dealing charges, was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors revealed that Carr believed Lewis had assisted the police in his previous drug-related conviction, leading to the motive for the killing.

Vansickle played a role in the crime by driving Lewis to the scene where he was murdered. According to an affidavit, she witnessed the assailant, later identified as Carr, firing the first two gunshots at the victim.

Prior to Carr’s trial, prosecutors filed a motion stating that he had threatened several potential witnesses, including Vansickle. The document alleged that Carr had even threatened Vansickle and her children, warning her against cooperating with the police.

As part of a plea agreement, the charge of aiding, inducing, or causing murder against Vansickle was dismissed. Court records indicate that Vansickle had no prior convictions before this incident.

The sentencing of Vansickle brings some closure to the case, although the tragic loss of Jason Lewis will forever be mourned by his loved ones. The sentencing serves as a reminder that justice will prevail in the face of such heinous acts.
