Authorities Arrest Girlfriend of Suspect in Illinois Shooting Rampage

Authorities in Joliet, Illinois made a significant breakthrough in their investigation into the recent shooting rampage that claimed the lives of eight people. On Wednesday, they apprehended the girlfriend of the primary suspect, charging the 21-year-old woman with felony obstruction of justice. The arrest follows allegations that she hindered the investigation in various ways, impeding the efforts to bring the suspect to justice.

Kyleigh Cleveland-Singleton, who appeared visibly distraught and emotional during her arrest, was placed under home confinement after her initial court appearance on Thursday. As reported by ABC7 Chicago, Cleveland-Singleton’s actions and statements seemed to suggest an attempt to prevent the apprehension of the suspect, Romeo Nance. The police obtained a criminal complaint, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, which revealed that she claimed to be unaware of Nance’s phone number.

It is worth noting that Cleveland-Singleton is not only the girlfriend of the suspect but also the mother of their 3-year-old son. During the investigation, authorities were searching for the child when they made contact with Cleveland-Singleton. She willingly agreed to participate in a voluntary interview, leading to her subsequent arrest. If convicted, she could face a prison sentence ranging from one to six years.

The primary suspect, Romeo Nance, a 23-year-old man, is believed to be responsible for the shooting spree that resulted in the deaths of seven members of his own family. The victims, tragically identified as his mother, brother, three sisters, aunt, and uncle, were brutally murdered on Monday. As of Thursday, the motive behind these heinous acts remains unclear.

Additionally, Nance is suspected of fatally shooting a 28-year-old man named Toyosi Bakare and injuring a 42-year-old man on Sunday afternoon. Law enforcement officials have characterized these incidents as seemingly random acts of violence. Subsequently, Nance fled to Texas, where police officers and federal agents pursued him in a high-speed chase involving his red Toyota Camry. Ultimately, Nance took his own life shortly after.

As the investigation continues, Kyleigh Cleveland-Singleton will be subjected to electronic monitoring while residing at her mother’s house. Her next court appearance is scheduled for February 8th.
