A 70-year-old hunter from Iowa found himself in a hospital bed in Colorado after a hunting mishap occurred on Thursday. Instead of hitting the coyote they were pursuing, one of his hunting partners accidentally shot him.

The incident took place in Baca County, Colorado, where three hunters, all hailing from Iowa, had their sights set on a coyote that appeared around 50 feet away from them. Unfortunately, the first shot fired by one of the hunters missed the coyote entirely. In an attempt to make amends, he swiftly swung his shotgun and fired again, but this time, the shot hit his 70-year-old companion instead.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife promptly issued a news release regarding the incident. Todd Marriott, CPW’s area wildlife manager based in Lamar, described the incident as a “classic example of failure to maintain ‘zone of fire’ awareness.” He emphasized the importance of hunters always being aware of the location of their target and the rest of their hunting party.

The victim, who remains unidentified, was immediately rushed to a hospital in Colorado Springs. After receiving treatment for pellet wounds, he was eventually released. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with hunting accidents.

The shooter responsible for the accidental shooting was identified as Matthew Mullenix, a 48-year-old resident of Urbandale, Iowa. He has been charged with careless hunting, categorized as an unclassified misdemeanor. If convicted, Mullenix could face a fine of up to $1,000.
