Accident – Death – Obituary News : Allegheny County Police Department Provides Further Details on South Side Shooting

The Allegheny County Police Department has released additional information regarding the officer-involved shooting that occurred on the South Side on Wednesday. Pittsburgh Police were alerted to the incident after a ShotSpotter detected seven gunshots in the area.

The man who was shot by the police has been identified as 26-year-old Austyn Cousins. According to officials, the encounter between Cousins and a Pittsburgh Police Officer took place outside a residence on the 1900 block of Huron Street. At the time of the incident, Cousins was near his vehicle, with the trunk open. The officer noticed firearms inside the trunk, prompting him to issue orders to Cousins.

Initially complying with the officer’s instructions, Cousins suddenly moved towards the trunk in what was described as an abrupt manner. The officer warned Cousins to move away, but Cousins reached into the trunk, prompting the officer to respond by firing multiple shots. Despite the immediate application of aid by responding officers, Cousins succumbed to his injuries.

During a search of the scene, detectives discovered two rifles inside the trunk of Cousins’ vehicle. Furthermore, several bullet holes were found inside his residence, along with an additional 11 firearms. The officer involved in the shooting will have his status determined by the Pittsburgh Police. Subsequently, the Allegheny County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an investigation to determine if the use of force was justified.
