24-Year-Old Man Faces Trial for Murder in Anchorage Courtroom

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – The criminal trial of a 24-year-old man charged with first- and second-degree murder began on Thursday in an Anchorage courtroom.

After evading authorities for several weeks, Mickee Thompson, who was 19 at the time, was apprehended in May 2018 as a suspect in the Mountain View homicide case involving his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend, 21-year-old Sosaia Finau.

In June 2023, Thompson pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in relation to the shooting. He was subsequently sentenced to 35 years in prison by Judge Peter Ramgren in Anchorage Superior Court.

The ongoing trial, presided over by Judge Ramgren, began with the opening statements from state prosecutors.

Prosecution Alleges Deliberate and Overwhelming Attack

In his opening statements, prosecuting attorney Travis Atkinson asserted, “The evidence will show, ladies and gentlemen, that Sosaia Finau was killed at a moment when he was surprised, outnumbered, and overwhelmed, and Mickee Thompson did it intentionally.”

According to the state’s account, Thompson and another individual, Robert Smith, went to the apartment of Thompson’s ex-girlfriend. An argument ensued between Thompson and his ex-girlfriend, with their 11-month-old baby present.

Finau, who was also present in the apartment, intervened to de-escalate the situation. It was at this point that Thompson and Smith allegedly began shooting.

Atkinson further detailed, “The defendant dropped his son — who was still strapped in his car carrier — onto the ground. He then drew a gun and started shooting. He and Robert Smith repeatedly fired at him.”

Defense Yet to Present Opening Statement and Witnesses

On Thursday, the defense opted not to present an opening statement and did not call any witnesses. The defense team informed the court of their intention to introduce witnesses starting next week.

The trial is scheduled to resume on Monday, Jan. 29 at 9 a.m.
