Truck Driver with a History of Crimes Faces Charges in Fatal Crash

A truck driver who is accused of fatally striking a Massachusetts police officer and a utility employee, before pulling a knife on another officer, stealing his cruiser, and crashing, has been revealed to have a long history of criminal activity, according to a prosecutor at a detention hearing on Thursday. The accused, Peter Simon, 54, hailing from Woodsville, New Hampshire, has an “unbroken chain” of crimes dating back to 1996.

During the hearing, a judge ordered that Simon be held without bail as he awaits trial for his involvement in the tragic crashes that occurred on December 6 in Waltham. The collisions resulted in the deaths of Waltham police Officer Paul Tracey, 58, and a 36-year-old National Grid worker named Roderick Jackson from Cambridge.

Simon’s next court appearance is scheduled for February 29. His lawyer, Lynda Dantas, mentioned that some of the charges on Simon’s record had been dismissed and emphasized that there are significant mental health issues at play, without providing specific details.

Dantas argued for home confinement with electronic monitoring, highlighting Simon’s existing support network in New Hampshire, including access to medical treatment. However, prosecutors revealed that Simon has a history of evading New Hampshire authorities.

In 2009, Simon led police on a high-speed chase through multiple parking lots in Keene, reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph, until he crashed into a passenger bus, causing a fiery explosion of debris. He managed to flee the scene but was later apprehended at a restaurant. Another incident in 2016 involved Simon driving a van into a fence while attempting to evade police responding to an assault call at a Franklin home.

Simon now faces multiple charges, including two counts of manslaughter, armed robbery, assault, and leaving the scene of an accident. Additional charges, including negligent operation of a motor vehicle and failing to stop for a police officer, were added during his recent court appearance. However, not guilty pleas have been entered on his behalf for all charges.

In his home state of New Hampshire, Simon has served time in both the state corrections department secure psychiatric unit and the state prison for various offenses, including reckless conduct and assault.
