Judge Denies Bail for Peter Simon, Woodsville Truck Driver Charged in Fatal Crashes
A judge has denied bail for Peter Simon, a 54-year-old truck driver from Woodsville, New Hampshire, who is facing charges in connection with a tragic incident that resulted in the deaths of a Massachusetts police officer and a utility employee. The fatal collision took place last December, and Simon has been accused of pulling a knife on another officer, stealing his cruiser, and subsequently crashing it.
The detention hearing, which took place on Thursday, shed light on Simon’s criminal history, indicating an “unbroken chain” of crimes dating back to 1996, according to the prosecutor. The judge ruled that Simon should remain behind bars without bail until his trial. The next hearing is scheduled for February 29.
During the hearing, Simon’s lawyer, Lynda Dantas, mentioned that some charges on his record had been dismissed and emphasized the presence of “significant mental health issues.” However, she did not provide further details about these concerns.

Dantas argued that Simon had a “complete mental health network” in New Hampshire, where he also has an apartment. As an alternative to incarceration, she requested home confinement with electronic monitoring, allowing him to leave only for medical treatment.

Prosecutors highlighted Simon’s previous encounters with law enforcement in New Hampshire, particularly instances where he evaded authorities. In 2009, he led police on a high-speed chase through multiple parking lots in Keene, reaching speeds of approximately 100 mph before crashing into a passenger bus. The collision resulted in an explosion of debris and a subsequent fire. Simon managed to escape the truck and was eventually apprehended in a nearby restaurant.
In another incident in 2016, Simon was pursued by police after an assault was reported at a Franklin residence. During the pursuit, he drove the van he was in into a fence, according to authorities.

Simon now faces multiple charges, including two counts of manslaughter, armed robbery, assault, and leaving the scene of an accident. Not guilty pleas have been entered on his behalf for all charges.
Simon’s past criminal history in New Hampshire includes serving time in both the state corrections department secure psychiatric unit and state prison for various charges, including reckless conduct and assault.
