Three Arrested in Stoddard County for Theft of Scrap Metal
ESSEX, Mo. (KFVS) – In a recent incident, three individuals were apprehended by the Stoddard County Sheriff’s Office for their involvement in stealing scrap metal. The incident took place on January 24 near Essex, Missouri, prompting a call to the authorities.
Responding swiftly to the call, Deputy Travis Maddox arrived at the reported location on State Highway 153. What he discovered was a white pickup truck accompanied by a trailer, both loaded with stolen scrap metal.
Upon closer inspection, Deputy Maddox identified two men and one woman as the culprits. The individuals were later identified as 45-year-old Jessie Hernandez of Sikeston, 37-year-old Donya L. Smith of St. Louis, and 45-year-old Angela Smith, also from Sikeston.

Following a thorough investigation, authorities confirmed that the stolen scrap metal items found on the truck and trailer belonged to the property from which they were taken. Consequently, all three suspects were arrested and transported to the Stoddard County Jail to await further legal proceedings.
Charges and Bond Details
The charges placed against the three individuals are as follows:
- Jessie Hernandez – Stealing and first-class trespassing
- Donya L. Smith – Scott County warrant for second-degree assault, probation/parole warrant, possession of a controlled substance, resisting/interfering with arrest, stealing, first-class trespassing, making false reports, and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia
- Angela Smith – Stealing and first-class trespassing
The bonds for Hernandez and Angela Smith have been set at £5,000 in cash or surety, while Donya Smith’s bond stands at £10,000 in cash or surety. Presently, all three individuals remain in custody at the Stoddard County Jail.
