The incident took place on January 17th, when police responded to a shooting at a residence on 23rd Street in Tampa. Upon arrival, they discovered two female victims who had been shot and had managed to leave the premises before the arrival of law enforcement.

One of the victims was identified as the mother of the suspect, 42-year-old Michael Banks, while the other victim was Banks’ daughter. Both victims informed the police that Banks was still inside the house, prompting the officers to establish a perimeter around the property.

According to the police report, Banks fired two rounds at an officer, leading the officers to return fire. Eventually, Banks surrendered and was taken into custody. Unfortunately, during the investigation, law enforcement found the body of another woman, a friend of Banks’ mother, who had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head.

Further investigation revealed that Banks had written a letter to his daughter, urging her to enter into a relationship with him and not to date anyone else. This letter had caused tension within the household, with Banks’ mother and her friend discussing the possibility of him moving out.

During questioning, Banks admitted to overhearing the conversation between his mother and her friend, which left him feeling betrayed and upset. As a result, Banks retrieved a revolver from his room and began shooting at the two women, with the intention of killing them both. His daughter, who was in the shower at the time, was also struck by one of the shots fired through the bathroom door.

Court records indicate that Banks has a previous criminal history, including convictions for simple battery and aggravated battery of a pregnant woman. In relation to last week’s shooting, he now faces charges of firearm possession, first-degree murder, attempted murder of an officer, and two counts of attempted first-degree murder with great bodily harm. He is currently being held without bond.

Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw expressed condolences to the family of the deceased woman and wished a swift recovery to those injured in the tragic incident. He also acknowledged the bravery of the officers involved, who swiftly responded to the dangerous situation.
