On Tuesday evening around 10 p.m., authorities from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded to a collision at the intersection of Pondella Road and Moody Road in North Fort Myers.

According to the police officer involved in the incident, she was traveling eastbound on Pondella Road when a vehicle suddenly emerged from a nearby parking lot, cutting in front of her. Upon interacting with the other driver, identified as 41-year-old Melisa Del Vecchio, law enforcement officers noticed several signs of intoxication. Del Vecchio had bloodshot eyes and emitted a strong scent of alcohol from her mouth. Furthermore, she displayed incoherent speech and struggled to maintain her balance while moving around.

Despite the officers’ request, Del Vecchio refused to undergo field sobriety tests or provide a breath sample, as reported by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

Prior to the towing of Del Vecchio’s vehicle, deputies made a concerning discovery. They found a cup filled with a liquid that emitted an odor reminiscent of an alcoholic beverage. Additionally, an empty whiskey bottle was found in the back seat of the vehicle.

As a result of the collision, both the police officer and the inmate, who were present in the patrol car, sustained injuries and were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. Del Vecchio, herself, was also taken to the hospital.

Following a thorough investigation, Melisa Del Vecchio was charged with four counts of driving under the influence (DUI). In addition, she was issued a traffic citation for careless driving.

In conclusion, this unfortunate incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence. It highlights the importance of responsible and sober driving to ensure the safety of oneself and others on the road.
