Man Shot by Police in South Side Slopes Neighborhood: Allegheny County Police Release New Details

Allegheny County police have recently provided an update on a shooting incident involving law enforcement personnel in Pittsburgh’s South Side Slopes neighborhood. The incident occurred in the early morning hours, prompting a response from Pittsburgh Police after a ShotSpotter notification was received at approximately 1:40 a.m.

Upon arrival at the scene on the 1900 block of Huron Street, an officer encountered a man outside a residential property. The individual has since been identified as 26-year-old Austyn Cousins. According to the Allegheny County Police Department (ACPD), Cousins engaged with the officer near his vehicle, which was parked on Huron Street. Initially, Cousins complied with the officer’s instructions and informed him that there were firearms stored in the trunk of his vehicle. It is worth noting that the trunk of the vehicle was open at the time of the interaction.

However, the situation took a sudden turn when Cousins made an abrupt movement towards the trunk. In response, the officer urgently commanded Cousins to step away. Ignoring the officer’s instructions, Cousins proceeded to reach into the trunk of his vehicle. As a result, the officer discharged his firearm, striking Cousins multiple times.

Additional law enforcement officers swiftly arrived at the scene and immediately provided medical assistance to Cousins. He was subsequently transported to a nearby hospital, where he was tragically pronounced deceased.

In the course of the ongoing investigation, a search warrant was obtained for Cousins’ vehicle and residence. During the search, two rifles were discovered in the trunk of the vehicle. Furthermore, authorities found several bullet holes within Cousins’ dwelling, along with an additional 11 firearms.

Pittsburgh Police will determine the status of the officer involved in accordance with their established policies and procedures.

The investigation into this incident remains active, and the Allegheny County police urge anyone with relevant information to contact the county police tip line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS. In order to ensure anonymity, callers can choose to remain unidentified.
