Ludlow Man Arrested for Homicide in Springfield

A Ludlow man who was previously convicted for gun charges and out on bail for three other gun charges has been arrested in connection with a homicide that occurred in August in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The Springfield police discovered the victim, Dwayne Griffith, a 41-year-old resident of Springfield, on the evening of August 12th. Griffith had sustained gunshot wounds and was found at the intersection of State and Dresden Streets. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

Following an extensive investigation, the Springfield police obtained an arrest warrant for Ethan Fitzgerald, a 28-year-old resident of Ludlow, for the murder of Dwayne Griffith. Fitzgerald was apprehended on Thursday morning at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Dwight Street in Springfield.

This arrest comes just one month after Fitzgerald was taken into custody for two illegal firearms, one of which was a ghost gun. During the arrest, law enforcement officers discovered half a kilogram of cocaine, marijuana, Xanax, heroin, and over $60,000 in cash inside Fitzgerald’s apartment on Center Street in Ludlow. However, he was later released on bail.

At the time of the August murder, Fitzgerald was already out on bail for two other gun-related cases in the Hampden Superior Court. In March 2021, he was accused of a shooting at the former Magic Lantern parking lot in Monson, and in January 2023, he was arrested again for firearms possession in Holyoke. It is important to note that Fitzgerald had previously been convicted of gun charges in 2017.

Springfield Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood expressed her frustration with the situation, stating, “When we’re asked what can be done to reduce gun violence, the Mayor and I have been saying the same thing over and over again; hold suspects who are arrested for violent acts and gun charges. To see that this suspect had three open firearms cases in Superior Court and he was still out on the street is astonishing. This simply should not and cannot happen, and now a life is lost.”

Ethan Fitzgerald will face multiple charges, including murder, carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building. He will be arraigned in Springfield District Court.

Mayor Domenic J. Sarno emphasized the need for bail reform legislation, stating, “Simply put, if this repeat violent criminal offender had been held on any one of his prior gun-related offenses, including firing a gun in public, a life could have been saved. This is a classic example of why the state needs to pass my bail reform legislation because the current system is broken. Repeat violent criminal offenders keep on getting released back into our community.”

The Springfield Police Department, led by Captain Trent Duda, and other public safety partners were commended for their efforts in apprehending Fitzgerald.
