Kyleigh Cleveland-Singleton, 21, is accused of obstructing justice by preventing police from locating her boyfriend, Romeo Nance, 23, following the horrific shootings that left eight people dead.

Cleveland-Singleton, who is also the mother of Nance’s three-year-old son, was apprehended on Wednesday and charged with one count of obstructing justice. Police initially approached her when they were searching for the couple’s son on Monday after the attacks. It was believed that the child might have been with his mother and grandmother at a residence in Plainfield. Police found the child and Cleveland-Singleton at the house, and she voluntarily accompanied the police for questioning. However, authorities suspect that she made statements that hindered their efforts to apprehend Nance. The date of her next court appearance is currently unknown.

The haunting surveillance footage, recorded at around 4:15 pm on Sunday, shows a man in a red hoodie apparently locking his car when a red Toyota Camry, believed to be driven by Nance, slowly drives past him. The man in the hoodie retrieves items from the trunk of his car before locking it again and heading down a side road. Just as he leaves the frame, the red Toyota Camry races back down the street, and gunshots can be heard before it speeds away. The victim, a 42-year-old man, sustained non-life-threatening injuries after being shot in the leg.

Nance allegedly went on a shooting spree, targeting nine individuals in Joliet on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of eight victims. Will County deputies initially responded to an apartment complex where they found a man bleeding from a head injury caused by a gunshot wound. The victim, Toyosi Bakare, a 28-year-old Nigerian immigrant who had been in the US for three years, later succumbed to his injuries. Police subsequently discovered the bodies of seven more victims at two separate residences, prompting Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans to describe it as “the worst crime scene” he has ever encountered.

After a confrontation with Texas police on Monday night, Nance took his own life. The shootings occurred at four different locations, with two of them on Davis Street and one on Pheasant Run Lane. In the other two instances, Nance targeted several members of his own family.

The victims of the shooting spree include Tameka Nance, 47, Nance’s mother; Christine Esters, 38, Nance’s aunt and a corrections officer at the Joliet Treatment Center; William Esters II, 35, Nance’s uncle; Joshua Nance, 31, Nance’s older brother who was bedridden; Alexandria Nance, 20, Nance’s younger sister; and two teenage girls, aged 14 and 16, who were also his younger sisters. The names of the teenage girls have not been released by the police. Nance is also suspected of fatally shooting Toyosi Bakare and injuring the 42-year-old man.

The motive behind Nance’s violent rampage and his trip to Texas remains unclear. Joliet Police Chief Bill Evans stated that they are unable to understand why Nance committed these acts. Nance was able to elude authorities by obtaining Texas license plates for his car. Following a confrontation with the police at a gas station, Nance died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, approximately 1,200 miles from the location of the Will County murders.

The Joliet community is still reeling from the tragic loss. Bullet holes were found in the front door of one of the homes where five of the victims were discovered. Family and friends have created a makeshift memorial at the site, adorned with flowers and photos. Grief counselors have been made available to support the affected individuals, and violence prevention workers have reached out to the community to offer assistance.
