The Delhi Police faced the challenge of identifying an unidentified murder victim whose body was discovered near the Geeta Colony flyover on January 10. With no identifying documents found in the victim’s possession, the police launched an investigation into what initially seemed like a blind murder case. After 72 hours, an autopsy revealed that the victim had been strangled to death.

In a first-of-its-kind move, the Delhi Police turned to AI technology to digitally reconstruct the victim’s face, including opening his eyes and altering the background. This AI-assisted reconstruction aimed to establish the corpse’s identity and assist with the investigation. Approximately 450 posters featuring the reconstructed face were strategically distributed throughout the national capital and shared digitally via WhatsApp groups until January 12.

Remarkably, this AI-driven approach proved successful. A man who spotted one of the posters outside a police station identified the victim as his brother, Hitendra. During the course of the investigation, it was discovered that Hitendra had engaged in a fight with two individuals over a woman approximately two months prior. On January 9, the accused individuals met Hitendra and subsequently strangled him to death. Police officials reported that the accused were intoxicated at the time of the incident.

In connection with the murder case, four individuals, including a woman and a cab driver, have been arrested. The use of AI technology by the Delhi Police in this investigation is a testament to the potential of AI in solving crimes.

While AI has proven valuable in the fight against cybercrimes and deepfakes, law enforcement agencies face the challenge of dealing with rising crimes facilitated by AI tools. Recently, the Delhi Police apprehended a B-Tech graduate from Andhra Pradesh in connection with a widely circulated deepfake video of actor Rashmika Mandanna on social media.

The accused, identified as 23-year-old Eemani Naveen, created the deepfake video to boost followers on his Instagram fan page dedicated to Rashmika Mandanna. An FIR was registered against Naveen for forgery and harming reputation under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act. The Delhi Police’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) Unit approached Meta, the parent company of Instagram, to obtain the necessary details to identify Naveen.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of IFSO, Dr. Hemant Tiwari, revealed that Naveen created the deepfake video with the sole purpose of increasing followers on his fan page. Within two weeks, the fan following on Naveen’s page skyrocketed from 90,000 to 108,000 due to the viral deepfake video. However, when Naveen realized the video had become a national sensation and received backlash from prominent film stars, he grew apprehensive and swiftly deleted the posts from his Instagram channel, even changing its name.

The Delhi Police’s use of AI in solving a murder case demonstrates the immense potential of this technology in law enforcement. While AI tools continue to evolve and become increasingly accessible, law enforcement agencies must stay vigilant in combating crimes facilitated by AI. With the successful implementation of AI in solving a murder case, the Delhi Police sets a precedent for leveraging advanced technologies in criminal investigations..
