New Delhi: Delhi Police Solves Murder Mystery Using Artificial Intelligence (AI)
In a groundbreaking development that could revolutionize policing and investigation, particularly in cases involving missing persons and absconding suspects, the Delhi Police has successfully cracked a murder mystery by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to identify a victim.
The technology employed in this case transformed a photograph, “resurrecting” the deceased by “opening” his closed eyes, restoring lip color, and changing the background – all with the aim of making his face recognizable. To maximize visibility, the police printed approximately 2,000 posters and distributed them at bus stops, police stations, and railway stations. Fortunately, the victim’s family members spotted one of these posters when they went to a local police station to report his disappearance.
The man in question has been identified as Hitendra Singh, a 35-year-old who used to work at an audit firm. His lifeless body had been discovered on January 10th at Golden Jubilee Park near the Geeta Colony flyover. Once the victim was identified, the police meticulously analyzed his mobile phone and internet activity, scrutinized footage from over 800 CCTV cameras, and eventually zeroed in on three individuals – Rocky, James, and Annie – who were allegedly involved in the murder. Promptly, the police apprehended the trio.
Identifying the victim was of utmost importance in solving this case. According to DCP (North) Manoj Meena, the police faced numerous challenges during the identification process. “For instance,” he explained, “we had to correct facial discoloration, particularly restoring the lip color from blue to a natural pink. Additionally, we needed to remove dirt from the face, restore freshness, modify the original background, and enhance the eyes to make them appear lifelike. To accomplish this, we sought the assistance of an AI expert and utilized several tools for reconstructing the victim’s face.”
One officer mentioned that typically, when a complainant has seen a suspect, a sketch is created to aid in identification. “In some cases,” he elaborated, “we even generate multiple sketches of absconding criminals, predicting how they might appear with different hairstyles or eye colors. In this particular case, our objective was similar. We simply wanted to visualize how the victim might have looked with open eyes and against different backgrounds.” Remarkably, the AI-generated photo was produced within a mere two hours.
The police observed that unidentified dead body (UIDB) posters often fail to provide a clear picture of the deceased. Hence, once the AI-generated photo of Hitendra Singh was ready, the police printed “hue-and-cry notices” and displayed them in prominent locations. On January 14th, the victim’s family visited the Chhawla police station to file a missing person report and fortuitously stumbled upon one of these notices. Without delay, they contacted the Kotwali station house officer (SHO).
“During the investigation,” the officer revealed, “we discovered that Singh was last seen with James, Rocky, and Annie on January 9th. When we contacted James, he claimed that Singh had been with him until 10:30 PM and had left alone. However, suspicion arose when the phones of the three suspects were found to be switched off. Subsequently, we conducted raids at their possible hideouts in Delhi-NCR and eventually arrested them.”
The accused individuals have been identified as Paramveer Singh alias James, Harneet Singh alias Ricky, and Priyanka alias Annie. During interrogation, they confessed to orchestrating the murder on the night of January 9th. The suspects disclosed that Singh and James had a heated argument, leading them to plan his elimination. Allegedly, the victim was lured under the pretext of a party and ultimately strangled with a bedsheet. The police later seized the car purportedly used for disposing of the body.
This extraordinary application of artificial intelligence by the Delhi Police exemplifies its potential in solving complex criminal cases. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovative techniques, law enforcement agencies can significantly enhance their investigative capabilities, ultimately leading to swifter justice for victims and their families.
