Accident – Death – Obituary News : Chesterfield County, S.C. – In a shocking and heartbreaking case, a 10-year-old girl from Chesterfield County, South Carolina, has come forward with allegations of sexual molestation by a family member. Mona Melton, a longtime friend and caretaker of the girl, made the distressing discovery and immediately contacted the Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident occurred in July 2022 when Melton noticed a change in the girl’s behavior while they were out shopping. Concerned, Melton questioned her, and the girl tearfully revealed that her (redacted) had been touching her inappropriately. Even more disturbing was the fact that the girl’s mother was aware of the abuse but chose to ignore it.

According to the official incident report, the child stated that the abuse had been ongoing since April 2022 and that the perpetrator had instructed her to keep it a secret. The report also mentioned additional acts of molestation committed by the accused, identified as Belisario Morales Mazariegos, a 56-year-old family member.

School Resource Officer Brittany Love, who responded to the scene, took immediate action and separated Melton and the girl for individual interviews. Love then contacted the sheriff’s office’s investigative unit to handle the case. The report further revealed that the girl’s mother initially denied any connection to Mazariegos but later admitted to leaving her daughter alone with him on occasion.

However, despite the seriousness of the allegations and the evidence provided, the girl’s mother took extreme measures to silence her daughter. Melton witnessed firsthand the mother’s attempts to coerce the girl into recanting her statement by withholding all forms of entertainment and forcing her to face a wall unless she lied to the police.

Heartbroken and disgusted by the mother’s actions, Melton immediately contacted Officer Love to inform her of the coercion. Unfortunately, no further action was taken at the time, and the case seemed to be closed. However, new evidence emerged in 2023 when Snapchat images captured by the girl provided undeniable proof of the abuse. This evidence led to Mazariegos’ arrest on October 25, 2023.

The Queen City News reached out to the victim’s mother for comment. Initially denying any investigation or allegations, the mother later acknowledged the truth and expressed her belief that Mazariegos should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. However, she declined an on-camera interview, citing concerns for her daughter’s privacy.

This case highlights the importance of vigilance and reporting any suspicions of child abuse or neglect. It also sheds light on the courage of the young girl who, despite facing coercion and manipulation, found the strength to speak up and seek justice. The Chesterfield County Sheriff’s Office is commended for their swift response and commitment to protecting the well-being of the community’s children.
